An LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) system usually consists of a hood, ducting, a fan, and often a filter. It is used in the workplace environment to remove airborne hazardous substances, such as dust or fume, and keep employees safe.
What is an LEV test?
The HSE (Health & Safety Executive) regulations state that any LEV system must be tested at least every fourteen months. It can be required more often in some circumstances, and the system may need to be re-commissioned after alterations.
Who can carry out LEV testing?
The HSE require the test to be carried out by a "competent person". This is further defined: "Competence is a combination of knowledge, skills and application experience that enables a person to do an effective and reliable job.".
It is accepted within the industry that a P601 accreditation is the indication of whether a person is qualified to carry out LEV tests. This is a BOHS award that certifies an individual has been trained to competently test and examine LEV system.
Do I need a certificate after an LEV test?
Yes. Your LEV tester will provide a certificate a short time after visiting your site. The certification could be more accurately described as a report, and will be absolutely comprehensive. It will feature a description of the site and it's processes, a more specific description of the extraction system and it's purpose, as well as a technical drawing and all the readings taken at the various hoods and test points. Most importantly, there will be a conclusion that summarises the tester's findings and any advice for improvement, and of course, a ruling on whether the system is satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
